This weekend a few of us headed down south to Weligama which is good for surfing and beach parties. On route we stopped again at Hikkaduwa to pick up my clothes and have some lunch. The place we ate had shark on the menu - not good!To get down to Weligama we ended up taking all the types of bus available in Sri Lanka - the nice air conditioned one, the public standard bus which gets crowded but is...
The days during the week are mostly the same, a combination of feeding, burying eggs, cleaning, tours and playing with the turtles. Its a really lovely way to spend time and I'm so in love with the turtles. If you go to the video section of this blog you'll see some REALLY cute footage of a baby green turtle being born accompanied by lots of ohhs and ahhs. Really special times, I'm going to miss ...
Today is my last day on the turtle project, I've had a great time and love the turtles. I've met some really lovely people and have enjoyed my first three weeks in Sri Lanka.Today we are heading inland to the hill country area (6 of us) to go and climb Adams Peak (Sri Pada). Adams Peak is suggested to be the place where Adam (as in Adam & Eve) first set foot on earth after being cast out of ...
Oh my god climbing Sri Pada (Adams Peak) was the hardest physical thing I've even done in my life. Imagine yourself on a step machine in a pretty warm sauna for 4.5hours after only two hours sleep and you'll have a pretty good idea of the upward journey. Then imagine how wobbly your legs would be after the 4.5 hours and add another 2 hours to come back down again. Owch, Owch & double Owch!!!...
Today I left Kandy and headed to Kagalle to start on the second half of my Sri Lankan adventure.I arrived at The Millennium Elephant Foundation (MEF) at around 1pm and walked into the centre to see a huge elephant standing in front of me and another 2 in the river taking a bath. Straight away one of the Mahouts (elephant handlers) passed me a coconut shell and there I was giving an old elephant a...
The first four days has flow by! The elephant I am working with is Pooja which is the daughter of Lashmi, Pooja is the first elephant to be born in captivity in Sri Lanka. Shes 24 years old and is a real cutie with a huge personality. The day starts at 7:30am, you meet your mahout (mine looks like Lionel Richie) and go to the elephants bed which is up in the jungle. The mahout instructs the elepha...
This weekend the whole group of us - me, Josh, Emma, Emma, Gemma, Grace, Harry, Mearl (Kathryn) & Jo headed down to Nuwara Elyia to climb to Worlds End. After climbing Adams Peak the weekend before I was hoping this was going to be a hell of a lot easier! We left on Friday after breakfast and got a tuk tuk to Kagalle, the caught the standard bus to Kandy then an AC bus to Nuwara Elyia. We wer...
This posting is a combination of random things that have happened at the elephant project that I want to make sure I don't forget.Firstly injecting Sumana who is an old temple elephant who has some nasty wounds on her sides. I was leaving the office after finishing my last blog update when one of the guides stopped me and asked if I could help give an injection to Sumana, I grabbed Gemma who is a...
We had a little party at the mahout hut the other night and my mahout (who speaks very little English) invited me to his brothers temple which is about 25kms away. The idea would be that we would finish work at 4pm and get a tuk tuk there. The next morning Ruwan - who speaks good English - came over and said he would come with us and if I wanted we could take the van as its more comfortable. So...
A sad, sad day has come. I've had to say goodbye to the elephants and leave MEF. I've had the most amazing time and will be coming back.I spent my last day just hugging and watching the elephants - it was all very emotional and I kept welling up. ...
